Title: Research Assistant

Campus Title: Mass Timber Project Specialist

Duration: Position is funded for three years and appointment will be in one-year intervals over three year period (possible extension pending funding)

Salary: 55-65K depending on qualifications

Brief Description of Duties: For over a century SUNY-ESF has provided leadership in the sustainable management of forests and the development of wood products for sustainable construction. As part of the ESF Discovery Challenge, ESF has committed to provide leadership to advance understanding, remove barriers, and reduce risk for mass timber construction. This leadership is being supported by a trans-disciplinary team of researchers from Forestry, Wood Science, Construction Management, Sustainable Energy Management, Environmental Studies, and Landscape Architecture.

We are looking for two individuals to join our team in pursuing these goals.

Position 1 – The successful applicant will work as an applied researcher assisting faculty members with design, fabrication, and testing of mass timber building components. Responsibilities will include material acquisition, research on assembly techniques, and shop supervision including testing machine programming and maintenance. The researcher will work with faculty, staff and stakeholders to identify additional funding opportunities for the project, and assist in the preparation of funding proposals and manuscripts. This individual will also be involved in project management activities such as coordinating meetings with internal and external individuals and groups, report writing, and associated administrative tasks.

Position 2 – The successful applicant will work as an applied researcher with faculty, staff, and stakeholders to identify additional funding opportunities for the project, and assist in the preparation of funding proposals. In addition, the researcher will assist faculty members with life cycle assessments and technoeconomic analyses of mass timber buildings from the harvesting of forest products to the completion of the building. The successful applicant will also assist faculty members with quantitative and qualitative social science research of stakeholders and others. This individual will also be involved in project management activities such as coordinating meetings with internal and external individuals and groups, report writing, and associated administrative tasks.

Requirements:

· Earned graduate degree in a field related to this work.

Preferred Qualifications:

Position 1 –

· Ph.D. in a field related to this work.

· Success managing projects with varied stakeholders and funding sources

· Able to work independently in an applied research environment.

· Ability to fabricate, assemble, and test wood construction assemblies.

· Digital fabrication/BIM/CAD expertise

· Proposal, report and paper writing skills

Position 2 –

· Ph.D. in a field related to this work.

· Success managing projects with varied stakeholders and funding sources

· Able to work independently in an applied research environment.

· Familiarity with Life Cycle Assessment and Technoeconomic Analysis

· Familiarity with forest systems and products

· Experience with social survey methods, statistics, and qualitative and quantitative analysis methods

· Proposal, report and paper writing skills

Additional Information:
